What is the purpose of the three-point line?

The purpose of the three-point line is to specify where players can score three points for their shot. When a player makes a basket from beyond this line, their team is awarded three points rather than the standard two points for a shot made inside the arc. This rule adds a strategic element to the game, as players must decide when to shoot from the perimeter for the chance at more points, balancing risk and reward. The three-point line is a fundamental aspect of basketball that influences offensive strategy, spacing on the court, and player positioning.
